SO WHAT’S GOING ON IN ART AND DESIGN THIS MONTH? First of all, May is Miami Museum Month! The deal is you buy one ticket and get another free (for your buddy, date, lover, sister, grandma, etc.) and if you join one museum you join them all (for this month only of course).
There are plenty of intriguing lectures lined up like the MDPL‘s series on historic green buildings and the Coral Gables Museum’s feature on the work of Cezanne. If you’re in the mood to get those fingers wet the Bass Museum offers awesome Saturday classes! This month’s classes focus on drawing from the masters and watercolor. If you really want to dedicate your time to expressing that creativity MOCA and the Miami Beach Art Center offer an array of them from figure drawing to printmaking.
And for those of you who are really in it for the fun, there’ll be plenty of that too: May 6th is the Miami AIA‘s yearly golf tournament and every Friday the Bass Museum is hosting happy hours with complimentary cocktails and beats by Desiree .

It used to be that Miami had very limited options for true music lovers looking for a good time.

Most of what was available were the numerous nightclubs in Downtown & SoBe, bars in the Grove and happy hour in the Gables. The problem was that most of these venues played only electronic, hip hop or latin influenced music.
That all began to change with the digitalization of the music industry. In the past few years artists of all shapes and sizes have been touring more frequently because of large falls in sales caused by illegal music downloads made widely available through the internet. Even for those who still buy music the fact that they can buy songs individually without having to buy the whole album (like in the heyday of CDs) put a big dent on overall sales.
$0.99 per song vs. $15.00 per album? Great for us, sucks for them.
To make up for this, artists are performing in cities where they didn’t used go to before because they didn’t really have to. Now we can locally get a good taste of genres that just weren’t as readily available before like folk, alternative rock, funk, classic rock, and electro-indie.
Keeping up with this growing trend in demand we have seen a fortunate jolt in the uprising of raw live music venues around Miami. Finally there are so many shows in town that it’s hard to keep up!

IN TOWN: Miami Food Truck Frenzy

So over the past year the West Coast Food Truck Frenzy has made its way into the streets of Miami. Originating from the numerous loncheras that served typical Mexican dishes in Southern California, the food trucks expanded the concept by creating mini gourmet restaurants on wheels that serve very affordable meals at street food prices. The idea exploded and now they can be seen all over town!

I recently acquired a new lens that I’ve been drooling over for years – a Canon 10 – 22 mm wide angle lens. Though I wanted this lens to shoot architecture and interiors, I also enjoy using it to play with distortions. I’m big on treasure hunts. I’ve been that way since the age of 3 when I first discovered the concept. Two decades later the treasures have changed but the idea remains the same. To me, being the design junkie that I am, the most exhilarating types of finds are cool furniture and accessories at very affordable prices. In this state of mind I recently visited my local thrift store to see what treasures I could dig up.
The following are images of my favorite items from the visit to Out of the Closet on Alton Road:
Coasters with architectural prints of monuments from German town
Small porcelain vessels with metal latch
Classic white porcelain candlesticks
Pair of red modern faux suede chairs
Polished chrome chair: Needs to be re-upholstered but has a great frame!
Bamboo and wicker chair: I would paint this glossy white or black and call it a day!
This could come in handy for Bonnaroo (Nashville is very close to Manchester)!
Hmm I never read Under The Tuscan Sun but just seeing this made me imagine being in Tuscany so it made it on here!
This was a cool little book with nice old school illustrations

Okay, so I don’t know who exactly is responsible for bringing all these AWESOME* bands to Miami next month but whoever you are, wherever you may be… You Rock! It just seems improbable that such a group as Yeaysayer, LCD Soundsystem, Vampire Weekend, MGMT and Phoenix spontaneously decided to visit our town all within the same four weeks.
Whatever the intention may be, I’m looking forward to a month of great music.
If you aren’t familiar with these bands I’d suggest hitting up Pandora and giving these guys a try. For those of you interested in tickets you can find them at Live Nation or Ticketmaster.

This February I tried the Il Mulino in Aspen and ended up going back 3-4 times in the 1 week I spent there. The service was friendly and meticulous, the dishes were authentic though distinct in flavor while the execution of everything from the bread to the dessert was ridiculously on point. In other words, everything was perfect – every time. Phenomenal Italian.
