ARCHITECTURE: The Case Study Houses

In post-war Southern California the residential housing boom inspired a group of prominent architects sponsored by Arts and Architecture Magazine to tackle what they saw as the current issues in the typical American home. Each architect was to deal with one of these problems and resolve it in the best way they saw fit using materials and methods that would be readily available and easily duplicated. The program that was to be known as the Case Study Houses ran from 1945 up until 1966.
The group of architects included many of the big names of Mid-Century Modern architecture and design. These included Richard Neutra, Pierre Koenig, Charles Eames, Eero Saarinen, Rodney Walker, and JR Davidson. Many of the Houses (such as #22 on the left) were shot for the magazine by the now infamous architectural photographer, Julias Shulman.
The Case Study Homes changed the way Americans lived and built their homes. These West Coast models were soon transported throughout the country. The Stahl residence (#22), probably the most well-known of the Case Study homes, became an icon of American architecture and the new optimistic “Modern” way of life.
The homes generally sought to blur the lines between inside and outside by using innovative curtain wall building technologies that would allow for wide spans of glass. By placing load-bearing steel columns on a grid on the interior of the home, the facades would be free of structural responsibilities. The floor plan of the American home was Modernized by opening up walls and blending functions into large spaces; thus the marriage of the living, dining and kitchen to create the Great Room. The architects also extended the living space to the exterior by incorporating elements such as pools, large overhangs and paved decks that would further encourage the use of the outdoor room.

So summer is definitely here! It’s time for sitting back, sipping on your favorite ice cold beer and having a good time with friends. THE SHOP: Filthy Home

Designed and made in Brooklyn, NY Filthy Home’s goods are certainly not for the faint of heart.
Inspired by vintage design and “modern sensuality” this brand embraces taboos and plans to arouse your senses. This edgy shop caught my attention with their unique subjects and artistic approach to wallpaper design oh and not to mention their risque descriptions!
So I got together with the artist/founder behind Filthy Home, Ryan Cox, and asked him to share with us some insider information behind his creations, inspirations and the story behind them. Here is what he had to say:
So Ryan are you the designer/artist of these pieces or do you curate the store?
I am both. All the designs are my own.
Do you collaborate with others?
I have been talking with a few other artists to do collaborations, such as limited prints for Filthy Home in the future.
What is the guiding concept or view behind Filthy Home and the pieces you showcase?
My ultimate goal is having a whole home collection. I love wallpaper and felt it was a perfect place to start since that’s where the idea began. I have designs for (super dirty) stain-glass windows, porcelain china, throw-pillows, rugs, bedding and even bread boxes in my bag of tricks. I want to do them all now, but I want the designs perfect before moving forward!
Is there anything in particular about the pieces featured that I should mention ( inspirations, methods, materials, etc).
I personally work on all the designs from beginning to end. I’m up late most nights printing/working/painting on my designs making sure they are prefect. All wallpapers, prints and accessories are /design produced in Brooklyn. With my background in print design/printmaking the papers, inks and printing methods are only the finest.
Tell me a bit about the story behind Filthy Home and yourself.
The idea for wallpaper actually came about as an idea while I was fixing up my new (to me) 150-year-old apartment. I was stripping my metal front door to the apartment, and was planning on using chalkboard paint on the inset panel as a “to-do” list area. I was staring at the door and thought, if I wrote a to-do list down it would probably be the only one I’d ever write… so I thought I should do something more interesting.
I thought I should write really awful words (you fill in your own examples) in beautiful handwriting. That night I had an ex-Playboy employee get-together (we were a close bunch at the NYC office and have a monthly event since the office closed). I was telling a few of these friends about the idea and they loved it! My friend Lisa and I had a few meetings about getting it going. We came up with the name over quesadillas and I bought the domain name that night!

ART + DESIGN MAY 2011 IN MIAMI

SO WHAT’S GOING ON IN ART AND DESIGN THIS MONTH? First of all, May is Miami Museum Month! The deal is you buy one ticket and get another free (for your buddy, date, lover, sister, grandma, etc.) and if you join one museum you join them all (for this month only of course).
There are plenty of intriguing lectures lined up like the MDPL‘s series on historic green buildings and the Coral Gables Museum’s feature on the work of Cezanne. If you’re in the mood to get those fingers wet the Bass Museum offers awesome Saturday classes! This month’s classes focus on drawing from the masters and watercolor. If you really want to dedicate your time to expressing that creativity MOCA and the Miami Beach Art Center offer an array of them from figure drawing to printmaking.
And for those of you who are really in it for the fun, there’ll be plenty of that too: May 6th is the Miami AIA‘s yearly golf tournament and every Friday the Bass Museum is hosting happy hours with complimentary cocktails and beats by Desiree .
